Bed And Breakfast with a Sauna
The days of bed and breakfast establishments being cold forbidding hostelries managed by dragon like landlords/ladies has thankfully dissolved into history and hopefully folklore.
These days visitors to the Peak District can look forward to affordable accommodation that provides some of life's little luxuries as well as hearty food and a bed for the night.
To spend a day walking and exploring the wonderful Peak District landscape available it is reassuring to know that you can ease those aching muscles with a soothing sauna.
Many visitors will be aware of the benefits of taking a sauna and the feeling of shear vitality when hitting the cool air out side. For those who have never experienced a sauna they are in for a treat.
Saunas may owe their name to the Finnish word for a traditional bathhouse. However the evolution of the sauna is somewhat vague; though there is a strong connection with northern Europe.
In truth there are a number of civilisations that have taken part in 'sweat bathing' and given the centuries that the practice has been about there must be something to the health giving properties of the pastime.
For those not familiar with saunas a basic introduction may be required. Firstly ensure you have the time to enjoy your sauna; it really isn't something you want to rush, it's something you want to let time slip away with and enjoy.
On a safety point check that you are healthy enough to take a sauna. Pregnant mums need to ensure they have checked with a medical professional that they and the bump are safe to take a sauna. Equally others who need to be aware are the elderly, anyone with a heart condition, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, lupus, high blood pressure or respiratory conditions.
Check with the owners on the operation of the sauna and on the recommended settings. The chances are that they have used the sauna themselves so they are the best starting point for good advice
It may sound obvious but wear as little as possible. If your in a small bed and breakfast sauna the chances are you are running solo, so there's no need for modesty. Having said that you may want a towel or two to protect against a hot wooden seat or to lie on.
Make sure that you have everything you need. The last thing you want to do is get up and out every two minutes. Towels in hand ensure you have some essential oils such as eucalyptus, wintergreen and menthol to scent the room. Pop on some music if it is available and a timer can be useful to avoid overdoing things.
It is good practice to have a shower before hand. Its polite to your host and keeps the sauna clean and free from unwanted odours. Equally some people like to take in skin care products such as moisturisers though there is no need to over do them.
Once you have enjoyed your Peak District sauna take the time to let your body re-adjust to normal temperature. It is so tempting to get dressed immediately only to find you're now sweating more than you did in the sauna its self.
But most of all, lie back and enjoy.
